I need to get a life
July 27, 2009
I’m now accepting suggestions of activities I should do to get over myself a life. I’m feeling very bored, unexcited and unmotivated with my life. Of course I am grateful for life, and I recognize that it could be much worse and I don’t want any BAD excitement to enter my life (I’m not looking for excitement that badly!) but Bluesfest is over, the summer has been so rainy and the rest of the summer looms ahead with no interesting plans to break up the monotony.
I may need a mini vacation. I wasn’t planning to take any time off this summer because I wanted to save my vacation time for a trip to Nigeria, hopefully next year, but I’m bored out of my mind right now.
Or, maybe I could set a budget for purchasing things for the house — curtains, lamps, shelving systems, wall decor, etc — and have fun scouring the stores for budget friendly options. I’ve been putting it off because my mortgage has yet to kick in and I don’t want to spend money until I know how much damage my biweekly financial obligations will do to my bank account.
I should research car options. I recently discovered that a decent automobile might be more affordable than I had previously thought, due to the recession ending and the impact of that on my existing investments (what was left after I stopped investing).
I have two, possibly three blogs to redesign.
These could all be fun projects, yet I’m still not dancing with excitement at the thought of embarking on any of them. Please help!

Yup – you sound bored!
Here's a question: Is there anything in the whole word (no matter how unlikely) that sounds good-exciting to you? Maybe that will be a starting point.
I totally understand where you are coming from!
Here are some suggestions:
-instead of a full vacation, do a mini camping trip OR
-arrange a girls weekend to a spa/resort. you can research places within your price range for you and your friends/sister(s)
-organize a group such a book club, forum on the net etc. something that you are interested
-organize a dinner party for your friends. trust me, that takes a lot of time and energry. make it themed like a fall dinner party for example.
-join some sort of social network. sports, social, there are many out there.
-take a cooking course, art
that is all i can think of but I hope is a good start
OH! How about you start a cooking blog (if you like or are even remotely interested in cooking). There are some amazing blogs out there (like that movie Julie & Julia) where people chose a cookbook that is outside of their comfort zones and do a weekly blog on the outcome replete with description of their experience creating the meal and taste. Also, pictures. I would do this myself but right now, I dont have my own kithcen anymore so that is out the windo.
In any case, I hope you keep us up to date on what you end up doing.
I've got a cheesy answer for you, Emma, and some not so cheesy ones:
Falling in love! Just going through the highs and lows involved in that happy state.
Travelling to Nigeria
Travelling out of North America
Thanks for the awesome ideas, Rhona. Do you know I have plans to start a cooking blog, one that would focus on Nigerian food and this idea has been percolating since 2007? I have had the blog name for as long, and I have my very own kitchen now, but I discovered that I don't exactly know how to cook (just kidding, I always knew I couldn't cook!). I like the idea of going through a cookbook though, or in this case, through my mommy's recipes in her head. Maybe it's time to finally go full-throttle on that idea!
What about daily hobbies? Like the gym? Or could you get a pet? Or set some goals for yourself, like try a new recipe every week, or walk a mile a day, or do some volunteer work once a month? Or you can just explore where you live… do weekend trips! Or day trips.
Thanks Jess! With the exception of the gym, these are great goals to set to help me look forward to each new day, week and month.
Thanks for reading my whines.
Hmmmmm….
Hmmmmmmmm……..
Jummy, is there anything you could do involving Nigerian culture? Is there a cultural center where you could volunteer or concerts you could go to or a cooking class you could take?
My bright idea was to come up with suggestions related to your wild wishes. It turned out to be trickier than I thought! ;)
But perhaps a new volunteer project that you feel enthusiastic about (not something just for the sake of keeping busy) would add some interest to your summer.
I like a lot of the other ideas people have suggested…
Come visit me in Detroit!
I like Rhona's idea of the book club…..or lets go zip lining! :)
You should come to visit me in Vancouver. Free accommodations!
Oh, Jooms! I feel this way too right now! One of the things I am trying to do is to just be more social: rekindle those friendships that have accidentally sort of 'fallen away', meet up with people, and just generally have plans. These can be as expensive or inexpensive as you want, really, and I really think that meeting up with people and chatting is always a good time.
I tend to feel less restless if I've had a long walk and just sort of observed what is going on around me.
And I know your carpet is new and all, but maybe you should get a puppy!
So, how has it been going?? :)
