Lodging my house-related complaints
April 30, 2009
- My dryer doesn’t get hot enough. On the highest heat setting, it has taken me over 30 minutes to dry a total of 8 hand towels and tea towels. I never had to use the highest heat setting at my parents’ house
- There are light switches whose purpose are a mystery to me.
- My dishwasher is noisier than any dishwasher I’ve heard. I have to turn up the television when I have the dishwasher on.
- My front door has homocidal tendencies (it shuts really fast, desperate to separate limbs from people). Attempts to adjust it have failed thus far.
- I can’t find some things: my coasters, my knife set, the jeans I wore the Saturday before the move that have $50 in them. I am convinced that we left some boxes in the moving truck.
- My room at my parents’ house is going to need a couple of weekends to clean out.
I have a “30-day” inspection coming up in a couple of weeks where I can share all of my concerns but the above are still annoying me in the meantime. One nice thing is the builder has organized a Home Maintenance Information Session that should give me an opportunity to learn how to fix these annoyances or the others that will come up, and meet the people who live around me, so we can provide each other with a shoulder to cry on when our fridges decide to explode.
I do so hate to complain (you’re shocked, I know), especially when there are far more “complaint-worthy” things going on my life is not even close to being horrendous, but this place has always been for sharing the good and the bad (though it seems I’m sharing more of the bad lately). This too will pass, and I hope that I never have any big complaints.

I know, this stuff is all so frustrating! You just want to move in and be all set up and have everything be perfect, and it isn’t.
I hate to say it but it sounds like your dryer is really not energy efficient, which is not good for your electricity bill either.
Could those light switches be for something outside?
Oh, a meet and greet with the neighbors! That is such a good idea.
I imagine your dryer is probably environmentally friendly with only a certain amount of output allowed so it uses up only a certain amount of energy. The downside of this is how long you have to dry things for. Is there a valve or something you can turn off? We had this problem with our new shower, where it was a limited water thrower which would have worked great for someone with water pressure like in the city. All we had to do was take a thiny out of it, and it was fine.
Are the light switches attached to a power outlet? I know you have no cieling lights in the living room, so they expect you to have standing lamps. I had a light switch that appeared to do nothing the first weeks I lived in my last apartment until I plugged in a lamp. It was made so that I could leave the lamp set to on and the light switch woudl turn it on or off.
I hope you get your house woes fixed ASAP, as there is nothing more irritating than homicidal doors and loud dishwashers.
What are the appliances? Are they a good/more expensive model? If they aren’t energy efficient you might want to consider upgrading. If you only have a small load maybe you could put them on a rack on your balcony to dry? I also was going to suggest the light switches might be going to wall plug ins. Grab a radio or a lamp and stick them in each outlet and flick the switch to see.
Hey Jumoke,
The light switches may control some of the plug ins? Or do you have a gas fireplace?
Also when we were in our condo our dryer never got hot enough either. It had something to do with improper ventilation. It took 2 hrs to dry a load every time. Gosh darn thing..
you can always detach completely the thing that makes the door slam shut. However if a fire inspection dude comes it needs to be connected. We undid ours at our condo for Cameron’s safety.
