New house blues…fest

April 22, 2009

I’m having trouble writing about the move, and currently irritated with my washing machine for refusing to work, so thank God that the Bluesfest lineup came out today and I can let you in on the artists that I want to see this year (the complete list of artists performing this July can be found here).

This will be my fifth year volunteering, and I intend to sign up to work in the beer tents again, selling beer to all and sundry (provided they have valid identification and money of course).

I’m looking forward to seeing:

  • King Sunny Ade (a Nigerian artist and veritable legend! My parents, my sister and I saw him a few years ago and it was quite the experience. Since he will be performing on my mother’s birthday, I think I have a perfect birthday gift idea!)
  • Femi Kuti (my sister and I saw him at the ‘fest two years ago)
  • Divine Brown (she was last in the area a couple of months ago, but I didn’t get my act together in time to see her at that time)
  • Estelle
  • Matisyahu (a Hasidic Jew who sings reggae music? I was hooked on his song King Without A Crown a few years back so I have to see him live)
  • Ludacris (I can’t name a single one of his songs but how can I not see him?)
  • other artists that have now escaped me, but that I’m too lazy to look up

I’m looking forward to working during the peformances of:

  • KISS
  • Blue Rodeo
  • Ben Harper
  • Styx
  • Our Lady Peace

because I know the crowd will be a lot of fun. Fans of these kinds of artists tend to be very chatty, very upbeat and all about having a good time.

Who on the list (see here) would you want to see?

  1. I'd so be down for the Hasidic Jew singing Reggae! That sounds AWESOME.

I'd only want to see Ben Harper if he was doing motown covers (his cover of Ain't Too Proud to Beg wooes me) and Paolo Nutini – I only know one of his songs its bubble gum pop-ish but its about shoes…

Other than that I am ashamed to admit I didn't know any other of the acts…I am not as hip and happening as well…anyone.

  2. And Matisyahu is from my town!! :)

Wow, the list of performers is huge!!

I'd want to see King Sunny Ade and Matisyahu, too. Definitely Ani Difranco. Also, DeVotchKa, Buckwheat Zydeco, ooooh! Iron and Wine!, and probably many more.

    I want to go!!!!!

  3. Kiss, Live, Ludacris

Haven't heard of the majority of the bands… LOL – and just a couple that I WOULDN'T want to see :)

Interesting to see Jennifer Warnes' name – I think I only know of that one song of hers (I've Had) The Time of My Life (which, I LOVE). Didn't know she was still around! I'd maybe go out of curiosity to see what else she does.

Sounds like an awesome gig with so many performers – if you knew them all LOL.
