Belated trim check report

March 31, 2009

It’s very possible that I’m just panicking because we are in the home stretch (pun not intended but hehe): 10 days until I get to see the place I’ll be moving into as it will be delivered to me a week later, and 17 days until I get those keys and get to run around squealing. I think the time to get a mortgage would be NOW.

I (legally) got to see the progress that had been made on my house two and a half weeks ago and in the whirlwind tour (I think the guy taking us around was in a rush). I felt too shy to whip out my camera and snap pictures, even though my camera bag was slung around my neck during the 15 minute tour. My mom and youngest brother accompanied me and it was great to have them along.

I noticed one obvious deviation from what I had selected: I had originally decided to have handles on my kitchen cabinet doors, and knobs on the doors of the bathroom cabinets, but then I started thinking that perhaps the opposite would be better, so I contacted the person at the design centre that I had been working with, and begged her to make the change.

She made the change, asked me to sign off on it and send it back and I did. However, the change does not seem to have been communicated to the right people. The handles look okay, and I might just be fretting because I see this as the builder not implementing something I had requested, but I’ll wait until I see everything in 10 days before wasting any more time on the matter.

The minute we returned home and I entered the house, I started regretting that I hadn’t taken any pictures. I had failed you guys! I wanted to get in the car and drive back, but the guy who was leading the inspection had left before we did, so I didn’t think I’d be able to get back in. I kept asking my mother if I should go back and see if someone, anyone, would let me in and she said it wasn’t a big deal, I’ll be seeing the place again in less than a month but after hearing me whine that it wouldn’t be the same, she told me I better go and try my luck, since I’d keep harping on it otherwise, so I dragged youngest brother away from his video game and rushed back.

When we arrived, I saw some of the workers talking outside, and it looked as if they were leaving. I decided then I’d wait for them to leave and then sneak in, so we drove around the corner, waited, then drove back. In a sleuth-like manner we crept toward the front door…which now had a lock on it! Not to be deterred, I turned the lock and success! The door wasn’t locked. We climbed up the stairs to the main floor and were confronted by about five people, working away so quietly (they were cleaning all the dust off the cabinets). I wasn’t expecting anyone there!

I saw a face I recognized from the earlier tour, asked if he remembered me and told him I had forgotten to take pictures and would he please let me. He gave me the usual song and dance about how he’d be dead meat if we were caught in there but he let me! His only request was that I not include them in the pictures. I was happy to oblige and snapped away in a hurried fashion. As a result, the pics were barely framed: I just pointed at what I wanted to take a picture of and snapped the pic.

Here are some of those pictures (you can click to make them bigger):

The powder room is huge! There is no storage area (built-in cabinets) for toilet paper and the like (there is the closet for coats right around the corner), though I would definitely have space to put a cute little cabinet in there to store towels, cleaning supplies and toilet paper.

The oak railings with their Medium stain. I like how rich it looks!

The master bedroom. The door to the left is a door to a balcony! I think the closet space will be ample too (though it might be smaller in square footage than my current closet).

The other bedroom. Look at that little window-seat like alcove! There are so many things I could do with it: put cushions on it, put a collection of plants… (That box like thing at the bottom left is not part of the room.)

The kitchen cabinets. I like the colour and the style. I’m so glad that I didn’t go with the cabinets that I had originally selected, and that I took my mom and sister’s comments to heart (though when they were first suggested I seethed). They did find these cabinets a trifle simple, but they liked them better than the original choice and I like them too. (The handles don’t look bad, do they?)

I’ll spare you the bathroom pictures because they are fairly dark. There will be more pictures very soon…no one is going to make me feel rushed and cheat me out of the picture snapping 10 days from now!
