House decsion and indecision
January 6, 2009
I’ve had another meeting with my interior designer since the last one, and this was supposed to be my final meeting but for a couple of reasons I requested a bit of an extension so here we are, the day after decision day.
Over the weekend, I took my mom and sister to see the decisions I had made so far and we started with the kitchen. Needless to say, this was the most contentious room, where both mother and sister had definite opinions and these opinions didn’t exactly match mine. They weren’t completely counter to mine either, but I guess I was hoping they’d see my choices, clap their hands delightedly together, and we’d move on to the bathrooms.
That didn’t exactly happen: they thought my choice of cabinets were too “inexpensive Ikea” and looked a bit a bit plain. Their argument was that the kitchen should be a focal point, a place you sort of want to show off — not over the top but at least a bit elegant — and my choice looked a bit…bland in their opinion. I can sort of see what they mean (which is the problem) because that meant I was back in Indecisionville.
But on a positive note, the bathrooms met with their full approval, as did the carpet and other decisions. But in typical Jummy fashion I spent the rest of the weekend wondering if I should change up my bathrooms. Why? Oh, just because.
But enough about the indecision. I have had a decisive moment or two with respect to the house and during one of those decisive moments I decided to visit the house and…go in. I felt positively sneaky and if I had been caught I would have probably told them they should fine me the maximum amount possible, or hold me in jail as long as were legally allowed to.

I wasn’t caught, though, and I got a few shots of the progress.

The walls separating the uppper and lower units aren’t even up yet! It was very cool to see the “bones” of the construction. But do you think I’d be able to tell if they’ve made any grave structural errors? Not a chance!

I didn’t actually go much further than the first flight of stairs: I just stood at the top and took pictures of what I could see from there. I figured I have to save something for my next trip, right?

Oh, you HAD to sneak in! I definitely would have – at least once!
When is the final decision day? What did they think you should get instead?
Those stairs look like great workout stairs!! Up down up down! Who needs a stairclimber!?
(not related to this topic… just didn't know where to post it LOL)
When did you get the new banner? Have I been dense and just not notice that it changed ages ago – or is it new? :D
Kewl!
So when do u make ur final decision?
@Emma
I'm glad you agree! I'm happy to know I have at least one partner in crime!
@Shannon
The final decision day has come and gone. They thought I should get something with a bit more detail on the cabinet…nothing elaborate or ornate, mind you, just a bit more fancy. I ended up getting something between the ones I had originally selected and some of the ones they selected.
And yup…those stairs will be great when I'm carrying bags and bags of groceries up them!
@Denise
You're the only one who noticed! The marvellous Secret Agent Josephine actually made a selection of banners for me and after almost a year I'm finally changing things up!
@Oya
Silly you! I told you I had already made the final decision and paid for it!
I lived next door in an apartment when my first house was being built. I walked past three times a day. The day they poured the foundation, I hid a penny for luck in the concrete. It's excruciating to watch because you're so unsure. My house would go from the size of a postage stamp to a mansion in my mind, I couldn't picture anything.
Bland cabinets are fine (esp. for resale) you can make the room elegant with gorgeous dishes and art!
congratulations.
