Seeking style
October 10, 2008
On the best of days I’m not an interesting dresser.
We could blame the fact that they just don’t make a lot of trendy/cool things for women of a certain size, but that’s partly a cop-out because I have plus sized friends who manage to look fab whenever I see them. Sure, there’s more hunting and searching involved, but dressing in age-appropriate wear that doesn’t invoke thoughts of “she’s given up!” is possible. I’m sure of it.
And with this upcoming trip, I’m suddenly in a bit of a panic. Nigerians are stylish (and trendy), and I don’t want to get there and look like the bumpkin I have been all my life. I think some of my cousins might even expect us (my sister and I) to be fashion forward (and we can’t disappoint them now, can we?). If I’m honest, this trip is only a catalyst: I’ve been bemoaning my tendency to dress like a 45 year old woman for years, and seeing stylish coworkers my age with their cool tops and gorgeous accessories has only served to make this more apparent.
Since I wasn’t organized and didn’t buy summer clothing when it was, you know, summer, and they were readily available, I’m finding stores have transitioned to their fall wear, leaving me a bit stranded. Because of this, I’ve decided to focus on accessories: purses, earrings and necklaces. I went on a mission last night to find a purse/bag and came back empty handed. I want something in a fabulous colour. I saw a gorgeous purple one, but it didn’t pass the infamous test: can I slip it over my arm without feeling like it’s going to cut off circulation?
I shouldn’t have left this so late but there’s nothing like the poor judgement that reigns when one enters into panic-induced spending. It makes for good laughs. After the fact, anyway.

I'd be willing to go shopping for accessories with you anytime ; )
so I'm panicking for you, lawd…and you know I want to tell you to go to Naija being yourself and not trying to please any one and all that insightful stuff but I can't. Truth of the matter is you will be judged according to what you wear. My sisters who went in 2003 told me that Naija's changed so much in terms of fashion.
So what to do? Go get a catalog and flip through it, look for simple styles you'd like to copy and go shopping from there. Doesn't have to be exactly like the pictures in the catalog but it's a start. I know you don't want to hear this too….lol.. but heels? They look good with EVERYTHING. It hurts and you'll have blisters but that's the price you'll have to pay for trying to keep up with the jones.
I concur with Abbie on heels. They automatically make u feel sexier, feminine and more stylish even if you just have on jeans/capris and a t-shirt.
ah! so u are here too…was wondering if it was you…lol…came here via rethots blog…didn't know about this blog o…hmmm
i think abbie got the whole fashion thing on point…am also not an interesting dresser but I am getting there gradually
