Some decisions are easier than others
August 6, 2008
Since camera and house talk are both utterly frustrating for you to read about (don’t lie) and for me to write about, let’s talk about something that I am investing money in and that I won’t be changing my mind on—going to Nigeria!
I’m very excited that after 14 long years I’ll be visiting my home country again in less than two and a half months! Really, it has been too long.
The trip has been in the works for almost six months but there were some things to work out, namely, ensuring that we could all have the time off from our places of employment. This was confirmed for my mom (finally!) last week so now I can continue with my passport application and in fact have to hurry the process along.
Only the women in the family are going this time, so that should be interesting. The three of us don’t often hang out together (my mom and sister though are pretty close, and actually went to Nigeria together seven years ago), so perhaps my company this time around will cramp their style (too bad, I say!). While I’m sure that I’ll have a good time in Nigeria, I’m not foolish enough to think it’ll be an actual vacation. Oh no: when you go to visit family (especially family that hasn’t seen you in that many years), it’s more of a whirlwind of social calls, helping out (financially or physically) with whatever big project is in the works, and of course dealing with the greedy relatives. In droves. My plan this time around is to not let my heart melt at every sob story, otherwise I’ll return in (and with) nothing but my granny panties.
Even so, I’m looking forward to seeing my adorable grandmothers again, and seeing where my great grandmother is buried. It will be emotional to see the family of my cousin who passed away last July, but it’s something I want to do. It has been so long, too long. I have some concerns about the trip, but discussion of those can wait. For now, I’m counting down the days!

Oh, Joomy! That's so exciting! How long are you going for?
A real vacation, I don't recall you taking those very often! (If at all since I've known you??)
I predict that in the week before the trip, you'll be writing on here fretting about how you don't have your passport yet because you left it until the last minute and had to get it rush ordered. Prove me wrong. LOL. :)
I'm sure you'll have an amazing trip and many great stories to tell!! :)
With respect to the relatives, I would decide how much you are going to give them in advance, and when it's gone, it's gone!! That way you save your budget and your sanity.
I am looking forward to hearing all about this trip! :)
