On following your instincts
July 15, 2008
I don’t follow my instincts, because I have a tendency to second guess my every decision and every move. This is why decisions such as which DSLR camera I should buy (which I posted as a status on facebook), or when/if I should buy a laptop, car and house, stick of gum end up being these huge deals while other people can just, you know, do it with little fanfare and without the need to have a therapist walk them through the process.
It was the baby shower of my friend Rachel yesterday, and I wasn’t sure what to get her because they don’t know the sex of the baby, and I wasn’t sure if any of the wonderful suggestions that Juli made would work for Rachel. After work, I went to this wonderful gift shop to see if they had any gender neutral baby things. They had lots of teddy bear stuff and I almost bought a cute pair of teddy bear booties to go with a stuffed bear, but I just wasn’t sure! So, not surprisingly, I abandoned both ideas and decided to get her a gift card instead (which I managed to forget in my haste to the shower).
And after we arrived at the party, and the guest of honour arrived, I asked her if they were decorating the baby room prior to the baby’s arrival and how they were decorating the room if they were doing so. She said they were keeping things neutral (wall paint, furniture), but they had decided to do a teddy bear theme!
Arg!!!
So, I guess I can go back and get those booties to add to the gift card, but it irks me that it might be seen as an afterthought when really it was the original thought! I know it’s the thought that counts and I know the truth but still.
I need to trust myself more.

I have trusting myself issues as well. But I'm rapidly learning that my gut? it's ALWAYS right. ALWAYS.
I completely agree with you! Trust yourself more!
Maybe next time something like this comes up, you can think about this post and choose to do an exercise in trusting yourself. Just to see what happens. It's science! You need to experiment and then consider the results! =)
