Thinking chilly thoughts

June 10, 2008

It’s been over two weeks since I put on my running shoes and went out for a run. I even have a running buddy, should I choose to recruit her (I’m afraid of running with someone who is actually fit, but if that isn’t the best way to challenge yourself, I don’t know what is). Sheer pride will keep me jogging beside her long after I would have stopped running if I was on my own.

So why wasn’t I pounding the pavement this past weekend then? The freaking heat! I cannot believe how bloody humid it’s been here for the past few days—the “can’t breathe, feel like soaking in a kiddie pool, feeling mighty lethargic” kind of humid, where lifting a book to read seems like a true trial, and lying by the fan replaces all other plans for the day.

My mother is a thrifty Nigerian woman, so turning on the air conditioner before summer officially hits is an absolute impossibility. That and the fact that we’re currently in the middle of home renovations (by ‘professionals’, don’t worry) that requires the windows to be left open. She’d rather soak a bath towel in ice cold water and walk around with it draped around her neck, occasionally cooling her face and arms with it. She read or heard about this somewhere recently, and while I looked at her skeptically as I sat beneath the fan and moaned piteously this past weekend, I have to admit that when she tossed that cool towel on me, it felt absolutely divine.

I’m currently sitting in my office, dying of this intense humidity and hoping it goes away soon. I”m too lazy to go back and see if I complained about the winter a few months back but if I did, I take it back. A light dumping of snow would be very welcome right now.

  1. I can't IMAGINE dealing with this heat without the benefit of A/C. Seriously, I would be dead on the floor. I'm so sorry.

  2. I hear you!!! We are in a heat wave, too, and it has been insanely hot!

Here, the weather is supposed to break tonight and the high tomorrow is only supposed to be 86 F.

I hope we both get some cooler weather VERY SOON!

  3. It is criminally hot!!! Goodness I thought I was going to die yesterday. It's been in the high 90's since last week but apparently it feels more like 111 degrees. Can u imagine!!

  4. I completely understand your pain! Our air conditioner broke and we didn't even have a fan!

Sorry I never write on your blog, but I expressing my empathy with you and hoping to gain some sympathy :)

  5. *Denise throws snowballs from NZ at Jummy

  6. Wasn't that heat INsane?? We don't have A/C and I played soccer on Mon eve….wow…lost 5lbs in sweat!! It's back though, damn!! Keep cool Jumoke!

  7. dont run in the extreme heat, very bad

go out early morning or late at night if its cool enough

    oh hell maybe walk?

  8. Placing a cool wet towel around you neck really does cool you off. Your blood at the carotid artery gets cooled and carries the coolnes to the rest of you (so said my ex-paramedic hubbie one day when we were talking about heatstroke). We've had the AC on for Allen's health (MS makes you very senstive to heat), so we literally could not live without it!
