30 by 30
May 29, 2008
I’ve been thinking hard about my 30 by 30 and 101 things in 1001 days lists, trying to to figure out what was doable in each of the different time limits.
So far I have a tentative 30 by 30 list; most of the items on this list will be added to the 101 in 1001 list, depending on when I get around to completing that list. I’m hoping to finalize this list in the next week, so that the kick off can be in the next couple of weeks as I turn 29 in 20 days. The sooner I finalize the list, the sooner I can start crossing items off it and God knows I need a head start with these sorts of things…in fact, I should have written this list about 28 years ago. At any rate, by 30 I would like to:
- buy a house
- buy a car
- buy an ipod (not crucial, probably shouldn’t even be on a list)
- buy a Wii (not crucial, probably shouldn’t even be on a list)
- host a dinner party
- get my driver’s license
- quit my part time job officially (though I haven’t been working there at all lately)
- learn to swim (this might be better on the 101 list)
- switch to a high interest savings account (although once I knock the first four items off my list, I will have no savings to speak of!)
- get my teeth whitened
- buy a year’s supply of contact lenses and use them
- wear at least mascara and lipgloss each day of the workweek
- wash face every evening (doing this five out of seven days will count as “every” for the purpose of this list)
- brush and floss twice a day (again, brushing twice, flossing zero times will count as Jummy being a good girl)
- finish a 5K run/walk in 40 minutes or less
- run a full 5K (I actually don’t think this is physically possible—marathon runners aren’t human—but it’s good to have challenges on the list, right?)
- lose 50lbs (speaking of challenges…)
- pack lunch every work day for two consecutive weeks (and then keep going!)
- eat a combination of 4 fruits and vegetables each day for 30 consecutive days (and then some!)
- get 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least three times each week
- take iron pills daily
- take vitamins daily
- keep eyebrows groomed, even if this means visiting an esthetician every 6-8 weeks
- complete a scrapbook
- complete a knitted object
- create a blog design
- make a set of greeting cards
- launch GNG.com
- launch another site
- volunteer at a homeless shelter
- go on at least two dates (I’m not in full control of this; may have to do the asking out!)
- drive to TO
- go on a trip
- learn to budget
- get an article published
- meet an online friend in person
- prepare 101 in 1001 list
The list needs some trimming and I may think of other things. Is there anything you think I should be planning to do in the next year that I haven’t considered?

Eek! That's quite a lot to accomplish/change in one year!
I think you can do it – just don't be too hard on yourself when challenges arise. :)
I don't know if this will help at all, but one thing I have started doing is flossing and brushing after dinner without waiting until right before bed. By the time I'm headed to bed, I'm usually verrrry tired and that makes it much harder to motivate myself to do all the dental hygiene stuff properly. Doing it even an hour earlier makes it easier. Just a thought!
LOL @ buy an ipod and a wii. Everything else seems like really awesome goals though!
Except brushing and flossing twice a day. Does anyone actually do this!? The only way I can even get myself to brush a second time is if I do it when I shower, haha.
I'm curious about what happens next. I've seen loads of lists of goals but I rarely get to follow the progress through the list.
Will you try and do a new one each week or will you just decide on a handful to accomplish each month?
Good luck with your list – I hope you succeed!
That's a great question, Amy.
My plan is to keep you updated as I go along, perhaps updating the final list with a link to the entry or entries that talk about accomplishing the goal. It would be fabulous if I could strike an item off the list as regularly as weekly but I don't know how that'll go.
We'll see though.
Been reading the book "Getting Things Done". Lots of valid points about procrastination and the mental load that having things undone gives to you. You should read it!
