Mostly about (not) running
March 26, 2008
I now have pretty permalinks! This will not change your viewing experience whatsoever, but since I’ve been trying to figure it out for a few months I will be able to pat myself on the back every time I look at my blog. For that reason alone, it’s worth it.

So, guess what? I have nine weeks until I run the 5K, which is exactly how much time I need to complete the Couch to 5K program. I’m very unprepared, which isn’t a shocker to those who know me well. I just can’t muster up that urge to go go go unless it’s the very last minute and for me, this week is officially the very last minute. And what happens as I’m ready to go out last night? It starts to snow! It was a very pretty light snow at first, but then it started to accumulate. The problem with this snow is that underneath it are patches of ice, and it’s this ice beneath (from snow that’s melting as the weather goes above zero, then refreezing as the temperature dips down below again) that’s worrisome, and I’m far too much of a chicken to risk it.
I haven’t given the treadmill a chance either.
But never fear those who have sponsored me and who are still planning to (here, were you looking for a link?): I will run this race if it kills me. And I still have a goal to do it in or around 35 minutes.
Some things I need to get myself are:
- a stop watch [hopefully this weekend if I don't decide to order it through a friend who works for a watch company]
- new running shoes [to be bought in about 3 weeks as a reward for 3 weeks of following the program]
Despite the horrendous weather we’re still experiencing, my gung ho coworkers still run. However, I don’t enjoy running downtown: there are far too many opportunities for people to gawk at you (you know, when they aren’t rushing to accomplish the items on their to-do list during their lunch hour, or trying to get out of the freezing cold as fast as possible). I think these are excuses but really, why does running have to be so different from sitting at my desk, eating Starburst candy, or lying on my bed reading a book?
I think I need a body double. One that comes a couple of sizes smaller and fancies 5K runs for fun (or for a good cause).

I suck at running outdoors. That's why I'm so glad there's a gym in my building. No excuses. Because that's what I need.
Oh my dear Jummy.
Good luck! I'll be cheering you on from the couch! Maybe I'll even be inspired by you and get my butt off the couch and start running towards my own 5K. :-)
good luck with it.
Is that the cool running's couch to 5k program? I've used it; it's great! Good luck!
Good luck with the run! I'm planning to go for a 10k run later this year – I'm hoping I'll do well enough to make it a regular thing.
Tip: Buy proper running shoes. These can make a lot of difference to your comfort.
Oh, and I like the new logo :)
