Shopping trip report – Part I
November 25, 2007
I’m back from the trip. Our wonderful driver, Rich, deserves major kudos. I don’t know if I’ll ever feel comfortable driving to Syracuse—I like Ottawa’s highway system much better. I think I’ll just pray that Watertown adds more of my favourite stores soon, so I never have to drive too far.
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty shopping details, shall we? I must admit it’s not all that exciting.
I got the best deals at Wal*Mart and Target (even though for the most part it was just their everyday prices); none of the other stores that I was interested in had any amazing sales on, but they were more than happy to tell us that the day before (Black Friday) they did. The department stores (Macy’s JC Penney, Sears) had some good deals actually, but they were absolute zoos so I didn’t spend much time browsing through their selection and wrestling for the last men’s sweater that was 60% off. At Macy’s I managed to make my way upstairs to see some of the Martha Stewart kitchen line—I love the colours but I’m not allowed to buy any more house stuff until I actually have a house (details!) so I had to look and not spend.
There were a couple of disappointments: LB was having an amazing ‘Buy one, get one free’ event all weekend but their clothing was horrible looking! Nearly all the tops had large, loud patterns on them, were too long and were empire waisted. The jeans included in the sale were covered with designs; all I wanted was a pair or twp of nice dark jeans. Everything looked cheap and of poor quality to me, and there were no classic styles around. The things that looked somewhat classic were usually in a shiny material, or had sleeves that were too short (It is winter!) or were made of material that appeared far too thin.
The bookstore that I stopped in didn’t really have any great deals going on either, though I did see a book that I had put my Christmas wishlist marked at 50% off, but I had to leave it behind. Even the Body Shop’s weekend sale wasn’t exciting.

Shoes is one area where some Canadians will tell you that we’re ripped off royally when compared to American prices. The shoes I currently wear to work were $29.99, regular price. I picked up another pair for $14.99, the regular price for the same pair of shoes, from the same store, in Watertown. At the Carousel Center, I couldn’t resist two other pairs of shoes (in the same style but different colours, this is what people with large feet do): they’re cute wedge shoes that’ll look amazing with a skirt or dress pants. The red ones look awesome with dark denim.
I stocked up on my marbles, got a dvd for my sister, some treats of the candy variety (but not as much as I normally get and that’s something, right?) and a bunch of hair stuff.
We left home just after 6:30 in the morning, and arrived home around 12:30am (early this morning). It was a very long day. I’m glad I wasn’t working today…more time to get my act together for the new week. Although, at 11:45pm it might be too late for that.
