Finally taking advantage of the healthy Canadian dollar

November 24, 2007

kit.jpgI’m going shopping in the USA today and I’m looking forward to it.

I’ve heard that the wait times at the border are horrendous and that you can’t really get many good deals there. I’ve been told that I should have gone when the 1 US dollar was equal to 1.10 in Canuck bucks but I didn’t have anyone to go with who would drive me and cater to my whims of stopping at all the craft stores. It may be a disappointing trip but I’m still excited to go.

When I bought some Ameribucks two days ago, 1 USD = 1.01 CAD (bummer!) and of course it ended up costing me more in Canadian funds than the value of the US dollars I was buying because apparently the banks have to make their money somehow. That was a bit of a letdown.

We’ll be going to Watertown, NY, then fighting our way through the crowds at the Carousel Center in Syracuse. Usually I don’t find anything and my friends come back with piles of stuff. I hate having to pay duty at the border too, so I’m always trying to keep my spending so low that they don’t make me pay duty. That’s not the case this time: I’m ready to spend and hope all those delicious deals come hopping into my lap. Apparently New York state has dropped its tax to 3% so even if I have to pay duty, things will still be cheaper.

If there’s anything left after all the Black Friday shoppers have rooted through it all, that is.
