The Promise
October 29, 2007
I’ve got love on the brain and because of that, a song of Tracy Chapman’s is in my head.
Two years ago, I didn’t know any of her songs other than Give Me One Reason, Fast Car and Talking ‘Bout A Revolution, but an almost crush on a guy (it has “almost” status because I think I was just smitten with the way he wrote) who is a fan encouraged me to get my hands on a couple of her cds and I can now say that although the crush has faded, the interest in Ms. Chapman’s music remains.
I still don’t know a lot of her songs by heart, but if you ever find yourself with a couple of hours to lay curled up in bed while the rain pours outside, or you’re feeling mellow, get yourself some of her songs. Her voice is realy beautiful and haunting at times, and I’m quite partial to it in the song The Promise. To be honest, although I had heard the song before, it was when I heard the song in combination with a slideshow of a Nigerian wedding that I fell in love with it. In fact, if you’re interested in seeing elements of a Nigerian wedding which includes the engagement ceremony, usually held the day before, you must check out this. The wedding slideshow, complete with The Promise is here.
I may try that magic trick that people use where they embed a YouTube video in their entry later on when I have access to YouTube, and then force you to click on the “play” button, but in the meantime I leave you with the lyrics to her song.
The Promise
If you wait for me then I’ll come for you
Although I’ve traveled far
I always hold a place for you in my heart
If you think of me If you miss me once in awhile
Then I’ll return to you
I’ll return and fill that space in your heart
Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I’ll find my way back to you
If you’ll be waiting
If you dream of me like I dream of you
In a place that’s warm and dark
In a place where I can feel the beating of your heart
Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I’ll find my way back to you
If you’ll be waiting
I’ve longed for you and I have desired
To see your face your smile
To be with you wherever you are
Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I’ll find my way back to you
If you’ll be waiting
I’ve longed for you and I have desired
To see your face, your smile
To be with you wherever you are
Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I’ll find my way back to you
Please say you’ll be waiting
Together again
It would feel so good to be
In your arms
Where all my journeys end
If you can make a promise If it’s one that you can keep, I vow to come for you
If you wait for me and say you’ll hold
A place for me in your heart.
