I can’t wait to have patience, because patience is a wonderful thing

October 8, 2007

It’s going to seem somewhat unbelievable that I, queen procrastinator, she who has not yet sent the WurdyGurdy winners their prizes (Suze: I thought I’d see you in person and give them to you then! Matt: I have no excuse!), would be impatient. I mean I held a contest for marble magnets on Getting Crafty and only sent the prize out at the end of August, three months later. I actually think the winner no longer talks to me because of that (unless I committed another faux pas that I have conveniently forgotten, which would not be a surprise).

My latest impatience is blog related. Here, let me give you a lot more background than you care for:

Once upon a time, I had a diaryland blog, then I had a movable type blog. Movable type to me was the gold standard, and I loved it with all my heart. Some ex-bloggers who used MT might remember how I used to gush about it, and pray that one day I would find myself some server space on which to host a blog powered by MT.

I got my wish in October of 2004: a friend who runs a server offered me (or did I shamelessly beg? It’s all so blurry now) some server space, I grabbed it hungrily, and there I existed happily until August of 2006 when I bought my own domain and hosting too. I decided to pay for hosting because I needed to learn the value of a dollarit turned out that my dear MT and my friend’s server did not play nicely together. During my experience with MT, I learned that:

  • installing MT did not make you a web designer
  • installing MT did not make you a popular blogger with clout
  • installing MT and customizing it will cause you many sleepless nights if your brain is wired like mine.

But I refused to give up, and I had some mini triumphs: I managed to upload my own unique design (lost forever now), I managed a couple of upgrades when new versions of MT came out and each time I was able to upgrade my site in less time than before. But while this was happening, I kept hearing about this WordPress business. WordPress was open source and everyone knows open source is great. So I finally made the switch, and the ease of installing alone was worth the move.

You can see where this is going, can’t you?

I want my diaryland and MT entries to move with me to WordPress! And I want it now!

Unfortunately in order to move my entries, I need to be able to login to MT and that is currently disabled. My poor former host, who thought he was done with me last August learned that with Jummy, you’re never quite free from the nagging, griping and constant reminding.

I need him to work some magic involving the words CGI and Apache and I know I have to respect the fact that he has a life and isn’t sitting at home on weeknights googling “how to run cgi scripts on apache” since I’m not either *ahem*.

I need to find me a hobby.

  1. This migration will definitely take some work to effect, but it is not totally impossible. Godspeeds…

    And oh, OpenSource rocks! :)
