Responding to your comments

September 5, 2007

First off, thank you for your comments. Like most bloggers (except the ones who are so well known that they can’t possibly respond to all the comments they receive and therefore must turn commenting off), I really appreciate the comments of people who care enough to offer their two cents. I’m not sure about you, but most of the time when I leave a comment on somebody’s blog, I want to get a reply. I want an acknowledgement that the writer heard me and cared enough to respond. I like the idea of us interacting, even though we may be worlds apart (or, 20 minutes away by car).

Previously, I would respond to comments by email but I saw the method I’m trying out on a couple of sites and I thought I’d try it:

Instead of replying by email to your commentl, I’ll respond right under it! I mean how much more like a conversation could that be, right? I’ll italicize my response so it looks different from yours. To see my reply to your comment, simply find the entry that you commented on, open it and voila!

If you’d like to see this in action, please check the last few entries and see how I have used it.

I’m also looking into another way of managing comments: when you leave a comment you can click on a little box that will alert you when a new comment has been posted on the same entry. That way you will be notified of any responses that I (or others) leave to your comments.

Tell me what you think: would you rather I didn’t bother replying? Did you like the email method better? Are you indifferent?

  1. I'm a big fan of bloggers responding to comments which is why I try to stay on top of it, not that I have a huge outpouring to hold back! Although it's nice to see a thread-like dialog, I do think email is better in certain situations, but I commend your intention to reply, regardless of the method.

    Thank you, RA.

  2. Hi Jummy,

Found you thru April. My sister and family lived in Nigeria for 17 years or more, in Lagos and Kano, now they are settled in Canada.Nice read your blog.

  3. I much prefer email. I never will go back and check for comments after I've posted and I'll probably forget to check that box!!

Well the box would be checked as a default, but I will continue to respond to you by email :)

  4. I love the idea when implemented somewhere like Flickr, when I can easily see all of the comments I've left recently and whether the author or anybody else replied. However on blogs, I rarely go back to the original post to look at comments again. :)

Thanks for the input, Laura. I don't go back either unless I get an email telling me someone else has posted on the site.

  5. But we can't reply to your reply…. :P

This is true…so I definitely won't abandon the email method.

  6. i like the email response, but maybe if not too much a pain

you could post your response for others to read

    and still email the responses.

Goofy wants to know where the marbles are?

    is there an error?

    Matt

Good idea! I'll probably do both.

About your marble magnets…are you sure you didn't get them? ;)

  7. Yeah I think responding to the comment online is also great. Especially since sometimes other readers might be thinking the same thing, but not bother to comment about it.

The check box is good, since it'll remind those that need it, to check online for the response, or see if it sparked a conversation.

I'd say if you like the dialog thing, then go for it! =)

Thanks for supporting all options! Maybe a hybrid is the best way to go. I don't get so many comments that I can't respond to them all by email, and also on the blog if I feel like something to everyone.

  8. I love the new layout! Awesome…cute, especially with the initiative at keeping track of comments made. And it'd be nice to have the check box thingy (once you can get it working AND if it wouldn't much too much of a hassle to you blog set up!)

    :)

Thanks Joshie! We'll see how well I do eh? I have this habit of not doing everything I say I will do…you may have noticed that once or twice :)

  9. inbox baby inbox, im talking the main one
