Dear Mom and Dad,

Today you celebrate 31 years of married life, and I would like to congratulate you both on this accomplishment.  First off, without the marriage that started it all off, my existence would probably not be a reality, and since I’m your only child that blogs, the small world in which I live would not know of this momentous occasion. 

But enough about me.

In the past three months, due to circumstances beyond our control, I have seen the two of you in a way I hadn’t really seen you up until now.  Sure, I always thought you were pretty neat, and I wanted to inherit parts of your personalities when I grew up (I know, you’d think I’d be grown at 28 but I’m a bit of a late bloomer).  And while I’ve always looked to you as an example of what a solid couple is like, lately I see the reasons why I think you’re so awesome.

I’ve seen you caring for each other through sickness and in health.  I’ve seen you supporting each other, and being strong when the other was weak.  I’ve seen you being gracious, forgiving, generous and kind in situations I would have been otherwise.  Finally, I’ve seen you putting each other and your sanity as a couple first, and that is something that I have always felt your relationship needed more of:  it was always “the kids” first, then other family, and any left over time was used for each other and your relationship.  It’s been nice to see you carving out time for yourselves in situations when you’d normally do without because there is so much to do. 

I hope this new focus continues.  You’ve worked so hard for so long; you deserve to enjoy life–and each other’s company–a lot more. 

So please, remember what life was like before I turned you into parents and do more of that kind of stuff.  And I promise, before you know it, you’ll be moving me into my own place.  And maybe, just maybe, the other three kids will follow suit before another 31 years passes.
