I’ll be the sort of bartender that people come and tell all their problems to, not the Coyote Ugly type

May 28, 2007

Volunteering, like many things, has its benefits.  One neat perk for me this year with Bluesfest is that I have been chosen to receive Smart Serve Certification.  Now I am not sure but I suspect a lot of people who volunteer to serve beer (I will be selling beer and passing the drinks to the customer but I won’t actually be pouring beer), sign up to volunteer in this particular capacity because they get Smart Serve certified for free.  Only a few cashiers get selected to receive Smart Serve certification and apparently this is my lucky year!

It’s rather incongruous that a non beer drinker who is repulsed by inebriation would deliberately work for the beer tent three years in a row (although I’ll admit that the first year I applied late and didn’t have much choice), but really it’s great fun: people at the Bluesfest are generally in good spirits (pun intended) and beer drinkers are no different.  I haven’t had a surly customer yet; hopefully year three won’t disappoint.  Fellow volunteers are generally fun to work with and you really get a sort of carnival atmosphere in the beer tent. On hot days people are buying drinks quite quickly and the day just flies by.

So once I’m certified, I think it’s only fair that I have a party where I mix up drinks for all and sundry (don’t worry, there will be alcohol-free libations too).  Look for the invitation on my blog : )

(I don’t know yet what today’s WurdyGurdy word is but today’s entry has a couple of good candidate words!)

  1. OH, Joomy!

Now you’ll know when to cut me off and call me a cab! Brilliant!

Perhaps I will hire you as my official smart serve gal, and everywhere I go you can ensure that I don’t over-consume! And I can pay you back in love! All the love in my heart, to you! Imagine how proud you will be as the owner of THAT!

  2. dont stiffle the flow of booze now…. missy
