Patting myself on the back
May 16, 2007
I made a somewhat last minute decision early Monday morning to take the day off. Unlike most impromptu days off, where I sleep until well past noon, then moan about my lack of productivity, I woke up before 9:30am and proceeded to work on my room. Amidst all the dust bunnies volplaning around me, I unearthed two garbage bags full of clothing of good quality and minimal wear, plus two smaller bags of clothing for a woman who goes to my church and is somewhat fond of my castoffs. I loaded all into the car and dropped them off at the woman’s apartment and at at the local thrift store, and the sense of accomoplishment I felt when I realized that I would no longer trip over those bags of clothing was well worth the drive.
I also threw out four pairs of shoes! That is a record. The last time I threw away a pair of shoes it was because I was shamed into it: while talking to a boss he happened to look down at my feet and asked if I realized that my sole was almost completely detached from the shoe! It was mortifying and I felt like a true slob. Sadly, that experience didn’t keep me from wearing two pairs of sandals that were so worn in the heel that there were holes (and one had a detached sole), a pair of dress shoes that salt damage in the winter had caused permanent creases in, and where the salt seemed to be eating away at it, and another pair of dress shoes that had minimal salt damage and I cursed every time I wore them to work, forgetting that they are not comfortable. Throwing away shoes that I could still wear seems wrong somehow, but I don’t regret it.
While moving things around I discovered last year’s capris, of which I have about 11 pairs. So far I have purchased two more this year and I have my eye on more. I love fun colours like brick red or muted orange but my favourite capris are my basic black and khaki ones. Capris are a dream come true for me, a woman who hates the back of her knees and detests the chafing that wearing skirts brings. Capri pants are refreshing without being skimpy and they are well accepted as summer wear, so I can join in with the legions of women baring their legs without wondering if people are counting the dimples in my thighs.
So Monday was clothing and Tuesday? Tuesday was supposed to be papers but I have instead spent time writing about misspelling words and being crafty. Perhaps I’ll have more luck today.

Still, sounds productive.
And it’s always great to find out what you have – it’s like getting new clothes ;)
