Gala goodness

April 16, 2007

I was hoping to have a friend volunteer with me for the gala but that didn’t work out so I ended up going alone.  A friend was kind enough to buy a ticket for the event–I’m still not sure if he caught on to the fact that I was nervous or his natural enjoyment of networking with people made him decide to go but he did show up–and we spent a few hours checking out the place, sipping on martinis, eating some hors d’oeuvres and snagging some chicken kebabs, and dancing until my volunteer shift (midnight to 2am) came along.  I was very glad that he was there (Thanks Dave!).

I celebrated some milestones on Saturday night:

I drove on the highway for longer than 10 minutes.  I was originally going to drive the car to the bus station and then catch one of the handy buses downtown but I was running late (having to return to the house 3 times in about 5 minutes will do that to you, that and doing everything, from makeup to painting the toenails and deciding on the shoes in the hour before the event) so I gave my mom and pleading look and said very confidently to her “why don’t I just drive the whole way” and pretty much smiled and dashed and it worked.

I navigated my way home by an alternate (non-highway) route (due more to the fact that I couldn’t find the highway than a desire to avoid the highway)!  I really winged it as I had no idea where I was going.  I was trying to figure out if I was going further west as I drove home at 2 in the morning, and trying to determine which way North was.  Truth be told, it was a fluke but I made it home alive!

I got a boy’s email address after asking for it!
Sorry to titillate but this story isn’t as exciting as I’ve hinted:  he was my volunteer partner and I asked someone to take a picture of the two of us (and those other folks below too I guess).  I figured he wouldn’t want to forget me(!) so I asked for his email address so that I could email the picture to him.  He was a nice enough fellow and a pleasant conversationalist and as we talked I mentally ran through my list of people who might have a cognate personality to his to set him up with.  He seemed like a nice guy and was new to the city (ok fine:  I suspected he was younger than I and felt pretty neutral toward him and he toward me).

I had a good time and I’d do it again.  Volunteering was pretty fun to so if none of my friends want to go next year I’ll be volunteering next year–mark April 12, 2008 on your calendars!
