Official name, official game

January 27, 2007

Virginia left a comment on my last entry expressing that since she’s new to my blog, it isn’t easy to pick out what the word of the day is because she doesn’t know me.  I know what she means:  when you start reading someone’s blog and they say something as simple as “I went to Bob’s house again tonight”, you’re wondering who this Bob is [and if you're me, building a complicated story of their life together] only to discover that your assumption that Bob is the boyfriend was waaay off.  Don’t let that stop you!  Some of the words will simply stick out like a Jummy in a hot pink bikini [yuck!] and can’t be snuck into the entry without being obvious.  I promise.

I spent this Friday evening almost exactly like I spent last Friday evening and had a good time.  I feel like we’re mere weeks from a breakthrough on the character of me.  The only difference was that this time, my mother started wondering at almost 2am where the car and I were, and she called me to let me know that she’d like me to return the car to the house, but of course I was free to return to my friends’ house.  I think she was irritated but I couldn’t tell ;).  Poor woman has to work in about 4.5 hours too.  I wonder if they will worry less about me driving around town when I have my own car:  they’ll have to since they won’t be able to request I bring the car home by a certain time.

Before I went to spend time with my friends, I went to the craft store.  [Let it be noted that in the last two weeks I threw away two 40% off coupons and resisted going to the store completely].  I couldn’t let a third coupon go to waste and I was eager to see if there was a new congeries of scrapbooking paper slabs.  Sadly there was not, so I bought a magazine [40% off!] and two pretty sheets of paper and left.

As you can see, the game now has a fun-to-say name:  the WurdyGurdy!  I’ve loved this “word for years and I think I might even be its originator!  A search on google shows that somebody was using the word as a nickname last year, but my claim definitely predates that.

For those just joining the game:

WurdyGurdy rules:
I will use the word of the day, as dictated by my calendar, in an entry.  You must leave a comment in the same entry, identifying what you think the correct word is.  [I'm still toying with how to give everybody enough time to respond, and said that comments for each entry would "close" at 11:59pm my time [Eastern Standard Time] but I’m not holding fast to this yet as we may have some stragglers join.  January is basically a warm up month:  prize(s) will be given and we’ll go from there.

I don’t promise that every entry will be a WurdyGurdy one because I’m not that good, nor I cannot conceive of an entry that would allow me to use June 14′s word vexillologist [if you knew that this was somebody who studies flags, this game is clearly not advanced enough for you] appropriately, but I will make sure to let you know by filing applicable entries under the category of WurdyGurdy.  I hope this works for everyone.

At the end of each month, I will list the words for each day in that month, then announce the winner(s) who correctly identified the most words.  Ties will be broken with a dance off to music of my choice [I kid!  All members of a tie will receive a prize, to a maximum of five people].  The sixth will have to dance for the rest of us.  Live.  And provide airfare for all who want to see.

Prize
The prize will be a collection of marble magnets, lovingly made by me, with each marble carefully examined to make sure it passes the scuff test [these marbles would not].  The winner will have his or her choice of what s/he would like the magnets to say, or what patterns/colour schemes s/he would like the magnets to have.  All requests will be try to be honoured but there are no guarantees in some cases.

Enjoy!

  1. I'm new to your site and I don't know you at all, Jummy, but I'm going to have to guess that "congeries" is a word you don't exactly slip into many of your conversations! And now I know a new word, cool.

  2. I'm going to go with congeries also – though I did have to look it up in the dictionary to find out what it meant!

  3. i didnt even see that word, but im copying off the other 2

    congeries for 200

  4. I didn't notice congeries either, so just to be different, and to not cheat after reading the comments – I am just going to go with "guarantee".

  5. congeries. definately not a word i'm familiar with ;)

  6. [...] And the winner of January’s WurdyGurdy is Virginia, who got five out of six words correct!  Congratulations!  I will be sending you an email requesting your favourite colours or what theme you’d like your magnets to have. [...]
