Where we discover that procrastinating doesn’t pay
August 29, 2006
I hate paying extra for something.
I hate buying something then finding it even three cents cheaper the next day (I am that cheap!) and of course the incident with this domain name might remind you of the hassle that I didn’t mind going through to save myself some bucks.
You’d think, then, that I’d always be sure to pay my bills on time to avoid this fate of paying interest and when it comes to credit cards and my monthly bills, I’m very good at making sure no interest accrues.
But then taxes came along (cue the deja vu…but this is a new blog so I know I haven’t complained about it here yet!). Now for as long as I’ve been filing my taxes, I always had a refund coming to me. So a few years ago, I decided that I could safely procrastinate on the filing of my taxes, sometimes filing it two or three months after the due date. In fact, I started to see it as a favour that I was doing to our money grabbers: by filing late, I was easing the pressure off of them during their busy time and allowing them to process my taxes while things were a lot more settled.
This only works to the advantage of both parties if I don’t owe them money.
This year; I did. To the tune of 8 times more than any refund I’ve ever received. I had filed my taxes late so I knew that I would owe them interest on top of it. I finally called them today to find out how the processing of my account was going and guess what? They never received my filing! I cringe to think of how much extra I’ll be paying.
In good news though, I’ve finally arranged to pay off the rest of my student loans. Bye bye, ucky interest! Between this and my taxes, I’ll be in beggarville for a while but the satisfaction of being debtfree had better be worth it!

Way to go on paying off the debts! Off to a fresh start!
Whoa! How much do you owe?
Lol – remind me to tell you about the interest charge from last year – lol, it’s a hysterical story! If you want some entertainment, you should dispute the interest! hahaha
